Join SCBWI Western Washington at Island Books on Mercer Island, Sunday, September 29, at 3:00 p.m. for a special pre-season Nonfiction Series Craft Talk with guest author Clare Hodgson Meeker.
Nonfiction coordinator Lisa L. Owens will moderate a Q&A-style conversation focused on Clare’s extensive experience with crafting engaging animal stories. We will leave time at the end for audience questions.
Clare’s latest title is Growing Up Gorilla (Millbrook, 2019), the true story of how first-time gorilla mom Nadiri learns to mother newborn Yola, despite having herself been raised by humans in a sterile environment. This heartening book is for ages 8–12. And, as Kirkus says, it “will provoke ‘content grunts’ in nature lovers.”
We’ll discuss Clare’s original inspiration for the book, her particular story angle and how she arrived at it, her research process—and much more.
