Good News for Barbara Jean Hicks!!! Barbara has received confirmation that she’ll be leading a 3-day Founders Workshop for the Highlights Foundation in September 2012 in Honesdale, PA.
“Writing for Little Eyes and Little Ears” will be focused on writing read-alouds for pre-schoolers. Now she just has to plan the workshop! She’d love to hear what fellow SCBWI WWA member’s favorite read-alouds are, both old and new, to add to her research.

My favorite read-alouds are all rhyming books with a good train-track like rhythm.
My boy and I loved the Amazing Machines series by Tony Mitton and Ant Parker. Titles include Dazzling Diggers, Roaring Rockets and Terrific Trains.
We also really loved books with a strong repetitive element, like Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel (she could dig as much in a day as a hundred men could dig in a week).
Congrats Barbara (now living in Bellingham)! I suggest any of Bonny Becker's Bear picture books. My two grandsons, ages 4 & 5, ask me to read them over and over again. They laugh each time and know some of the repeated phrases by heart.

Martin Waddell's Owl Babies and Farmer Duck are both huge favorites with my four kids, all age six and under. Other favorite read-aloud books, especially for preschoolers: David Shannon's Duck on a Bike, We're Going on a Bear Hunt – Michael Rosen/Helen Oxenbury, Marla Frazee's Hush Little Baby, Simms Taback's The Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly.
